JUMBO DIDI (FRENCH) BRAIDS AND SMALL BRAIDS
Recently, I’ve been yearning for simple, elegant braids for protective styling and the first thought that came to mind was jumbo cornrow-like braids! Then I remembered my experiences with it ever since I became a full natural hasn’t always been nice.
What to do? What to do about it? Go for a braiding style that keeps my hair all tucked in!
Correct me if I’m wrong, the jumbo braids are called french braids right? Because that’s what they look like to me. Here in Nigeria, it’s popularly called “Didi” in the Yoruba language or “inner weaving” in english.
So, I told my hairstylist I wanted jumbo cornrow-like braids but this time I’m doing it the Nigerian way. An hour 10 minutes later, with 1½ packs of braiding hair extensions, I had this juicy jumbo didi braids. It’s simple and quick to do.
I’m hoping this didi style of braiding will keep my hair all tucked in for the next few weeks. Oh, well so far, so good. It’s been almost 2 weeks now and my hair is still tucked in as it could possibly be.

This means getting new products that promote healthy scalp and beautiful hair.
These are the basic hair products you’ll need for taking care of your hair:
Deep Conditioner: Yes! This takes priority over other products. Our natural hair has the tendency to dry easily, so deep conditioning is a must! The benefits of deep conditioning are numerous. It restores internal hydration to the hair, provides intense moisture, balance the pH of the hair, cuts down on frizz, helps maintain internal moisture balance, promotes elasticity, adds shine and luster, strengthens hair,...should I keep going on the benefits? I could go on and on. I’m sure you get how important deep conditioners are now.
Leave In Conditioner: It adds extra moisture to the hair. It improves manageability of the hair making it smoother, more flexible and makes detangling easier.
Shampoo: Getting a good shampoo (preferably sulfate and paraben free) is an important step to remove buildup from hair.
Rinse Out Conditioner: After shampooing comes conditioning. You may want to try some below. Rinse out conditioners aids in detangling hair during wash and can also double up as co-washers for days when your hair is slightly dirty or when you don’t want to shampoo.
Natural Oil: They are used to seal your ends after moisturizing to lock in moisture for the hair.
Wide Tooth Comb: This helps prevent much breakage when detangling hair. Small tooth combs are terrible for detangling hair, they cause a lot of breakage. You shouldn’t use them unless you have a teeny weeny fro.
Satin Bonnet or Pillowcase: Wrapping your hair in a satin bonnet or using a satin pillowcase helps protect your hair and prevent pulling and breakage while sleeping.
Other products that may not be very basic:
- Hair Curlers (rollers, flexi rods, perm rods, curlformers etc) can be used to achieve curly hairstyles without heat and blend in different textures for transitioners.
- Stylers, like holding gel, edge control and setting lotion or mousse, can help from your wash and go, to twist or braids. The right products won’t make your hair stiff or contain drying ingredients that can affect your hairline.
- Hair Accessories like bobby pins, hair bands etc.
Here I made a short list of hair products you may want to try out. Keep in mind that what works for one hair, may not work well for another. We all have different textures.

Sometimes you just have to let the mixtress in you come alive! My last wash day I decided to try out a DIY deep conditioner for moisture.
Ingredients used:
- ½ medium sized avocado
- 1 finger of banana
- 3 tbsp of coconut oil
- 2 tbsp of honey
Initially, I came across a DIY deep conditioner and the ingredients used were: banana, glycerin, honey and olive oil. I had all these ingredients except glycerin, so I tried out a remix. I added avocado just because, it was looking overly ripe and staring at me, begging to be added. I also used coconut oil instead of olive oil.
PROCEDURE
- Peel and dice the avocado into a blender.
- Add banana.
- Add coconut oil.
- Add honey.
- Blend until smooth. Make sure there are no lumps in the mixture.
- Apply to hair.
- Put on plastic hair for an hour.
- Rinse out.
RESULT
My hair was moisturized and I could feel the coconut oil doing its work. I was almost tempted to twist my hair without putting leave-in conditioner and oiling it first.
Have you tried any DIY recipes? Please do tell.

Left-Right: Shampoo, Garlic in coconut oil mix and Rinse out conditioner |
Hello Beauties!
Last Saturday was my wash day. I love, love, love my natural hair but I’m sorry to say that I wasn’t looking forward to this wash day. It had been a busy week and I just came back from a long road trip, you can agree with me why I felt this way. Well, it had to be done.
Here's how my wash day routine went:
Finger Detangle & Section: I finger detangled my hair as best as I could and sectioned in 4.
Hot Oil Treatment & Pre-poo: I did the hot oil treatment using my DIY garlic in coconut oil mix, then pre-pooed. This time I decided to do an overnight pre-poo and the result was indeed better. My hair was softer and more manageable.
So, my plastic cap doesn't fit my hair anymore (yippee! to hair growth) had to switch to a plastic bag. |
Shampoo: Next I shampooed with the ORS creamy aloe shampoo, working my way through each section. Then I rinsed out.
Rinse Out Condition: This was done with gentelle hair fruits coconut conditioner, then I gently combed through each section and rinsed out.
Deep Condition: So the mixtress in me came out and I tried a DIY conditioner using coconut oil, avocado, honey, and banana. After that, I put on a plastic cap for an hour and rinsed out.
Drying Hair: I dried with an old cotton shirt. Gently patting hair to dry it.
Moisturise and Seal: I used the leave-in conditioner, oil, and cream (LOC) method. I applied the Dr. Miracle's leave-in conditioner, coconut oil, and Shea butter respectively so I can seal in moisture.
Styling hair: I did two strand twist using the beautiful textures curl definer mousse.
The next morning, I unraveled the twist and styled.
And this was how I rocked my hair the next day. |

NATURAL FRO VS FAKE FRO
I know...I know, sometimes you relaxed hair girls feel like this right?
Once, I sent a picture of my fro all blown out to a friend who relaxes her hair and she was rocking a fro weave.
I captioned it: “This could be your hair but you think you don’t have the time and patience.”
She laughed about it and called me a hair bully. Some ladies out there would really like to have the natural fro but think they don’t have the time and patience for it.
If you fall into this category, then by all means rock that fro weave! The most important thing is to have a healthy hair, relaxed or otherwise. Though I am secretly wishing you could come join the natural team.
What’s your plan for the weekend? As for me, I have wash day coming up!

REDUCING HEAT TIME
Trying to save time when deep conditioning with a shower cap?
- Dip a towel in hot water and wring it or heat up in a microwave for few minutes.
- Wrap the hot towel around the shower cap and cover with another shower cap or a plastic bag.
This creates additional heat for the hair, reducing the heat time.
What You Should Know About Pre-Poo

The wash day routine can be stressful on the hair. There are lots of manipulation that takes place from shampooing to deep conditioning and so on. One can avoid much damage to the cuticle layer by making sure the hair is conditioned before this manipulation takes place. For me, the pre-poo (pre-shampoo) treatment is the solution.
So What is Pre-Poo?
Pre-poo stands for pre-shampoo, which means applying a protective treatment to your hair prior to cleansing it.
Benefits of Pre-Poo
- Soften hair for the cleansing process.
- Nourishes your hair and gives it a protective shield.
- Helps maintain hair moisture levels.
Pre-Poo Treatments
There are various pre-poo treatments, which falls under these 3 basic types:
Oil Pre-Poo
Oils such as coconut, olive, castor, almond oil etc. Can be used as pre-poo treatments. Sometimes using a combination of these oils is preferred.
Conditioner Pre-Poo
A regular conditioner that is lightweight and moisturizing can also be used as a pre-poo. It can be used alone or mixed with a bit of oil.
DIY Pre-Poo
You can find some pre-poo ingredients right in your own home and mix them based on your hair needs. You can bring out the mixtress in you and try out some of these DIY pre-poo recipes.
I prefer using the oil pre-poo especially, coconut oil. According to research, it penetrates hair more effectively than any other oil.
Pre-pooing for me is a must on my wash days. Sometimes I look forward to it because it is the easiest part of my wash day routine. I could pre-poo for hours and still get other things done at the same time.
Basically, pre-pooing is a bonus in my case. All I do is:
1. Do the hot oil treatment.
2. Put on a plastic cap for 1 hour or more.
And that is it!
Once I do my hot oil treatment, pre-pooing is a sure thing. The only additional thing I do is extending the time my hair stays under the plastic cap.
So hot oil treatment + extended time under plastic cap = my pre-poo.
Do you pre-poo your hair? If so, what pre-poo treatment works for you? Please feel free to share.
