3 Reasons Why You Should Do Hot Oil Treatment

April 29, 2016 Uloaku Enyingwa 0 Comments

Hot oil treatment plays a vital role in my hair regimen. It is important in the overall health of my hair. Here are some benefits I get from this treatment:

 1. It stimulates hair growth: Hot oil treatment moisturizes the hair follicle and strengthen the hair shaft, preventing hair breakage and promoting hair growth.

2. Nourishes the scalp: The use of hot oil treatment has a conditioning effect on the scalp, especially for those with dry, brittle hair. This treatment helps restore the hair to its best possible condition.

3. Gives hair a nice shine: The moisture infused into the hair during hot oil treatment gives the hair a shiny look.

PREPARATION FOR HOT

I mince garlic cloves and soak in oil (coconut oil, olive oil etc) for a week or more.

STEPS ON HOW I DO MY HOT OIL TREATMENT

  • Drain out the oil I want to use into an applicator bottle. If  an applicator bottle isn't available, any glass or plastic bottle would be ok to use.

  • Warm the oil in a basin of hot water.

  • Finger detangle and section hair.

  • Apply to hair (you may want to slightly dampen your hair before applying the oil) and massage oil into each section.

  • Put on a plastic cap (shower cap)  for 30 minutes or more.

  • Shampoo.

How often you get hot oil treatment depends on the texture and dryness of your hair. If you have a dry scalp getting this treatment regularly helps prevent dryness and breakage, you should do this with caution to avoid over saturating hair. Wash hair regularly to avoid oil build up.

Are You Pre-Transition Ready?

April 29, 2016 Uloaku Enyingwa 0 Comments

When I said goodbye to the creamy crack, I couldn’t bear to do the big chop because I’m the biggest fan of length and I didn’t want to come out looking really odd with it. So transition it was for me.

The transitioning process can be quite daunting, especially when compared to the big chop.
For me, the transition process wasn’t as daunting as people claimed or maybe it was just me excited about staying away from relaxers and trying something different.

Here are a few tips to make this process less daunting for you:

1.    Positive Attitude: Why are you transitioning in the first place? It maybe hair damage caused by dyes, heat, relaxers or... just plain seeing someone rocking their natural hair and it looks good, so now you want to return to your natural roots. Think about the positive side. You are on a path to a healthier hair. Thinking of the positive, makes it more exciting.

In my case the hair damage and relaxing issues was the major reason I decided to transition. This was exactly what I needed! The excitement of trying out something different for my hair kept me motivated for this process.

2.    Do Thorough Research: Spend time researching on this topic before going headlong into it. You need to get your information right. Thank God for the internet! There are tons of reliable sources online. If you have friends that have gone natural, it’s an added bonus, ask them questions.

3.    Have The Right Mind Set: This is going to be a game changer! The fact is you will be making some big changes in your hair routine from now on. Unless of course you had a pretty good routine before now. You are going to be spending more time, probably more money and giving your hair some TLC. So you have to be prepared.

4.    Be Patient: Try cultivating some patience, okay? Now there will be longer wash days, co-wash days, dealing with two textures, trying out new hairstyles and so on. It could be quite tedious. Be patient, as you continue in this healthy hair journey, you will get better at this. There will be a few tricks to pick up about what works best for your hair and some needed shortcuts for time saving.

After The Natural Decision, What’s Next?

April 28, 2016 Uloaku Enyingwa 0 Comments

You have finally made the decision to go natural. Kudos!
So, now what’s the next move?
Well, you have a few options:

OPTION 1: THE BIG CHOP
Big chop is the process of cutting off the relaxed, permed or damaged ends of your hair and growing it out from its natural state.

This option although it is more daring or dramatic, is the fastest and most simple way to go back to your natural roots.

OPTION 2: TRANSITIONING
Transitioning is the gradual process of going natural from a chemically straightened or heat damaged hair. Over a period of time new growth appears and the ends of the hair are cut off. You could start trimming the ends slowly before doing the final big chop or just keep growing your hair to a certain length and do the big chop at once (without periodic trims).

How long you would like your hair to be before cutting off all the ends solely depends on you.

I opted for the transitioning method, because I wanted to keep my length as long as possible.

So which option are you going for, the big chop or transitioning?

Welcome To My Very First 'Fro Post!

In 2011, I went off relaxers for 8 months, it was a bad move because I lost so much hair as a result of knowing nothing about hair care. I reconciled with relaxer, our breakup was short-lived as I had to go back to the creamy crack (relaxer).

In the year 2014, I again made the decision to go natural after years of relaxing my hair and this time, it was due to a really bad experience I had with a relaxer and that as they say was the straw, that not only broke the camel’s back but shattered it.

My bad experience with relaxers was the major reason I went natural, another undeniable influence was my friend Afoma. Afoma had gone natural and she was looking all shades of fly rocking her natural hair! I completed the final paperwork and divorced relaxers, making my decision to go natural finally (and I lived happily ever after).

I am Uloaku Enyingwa and I have always had a fascination for hair.
I invite you to join me in my unending natural hair journey as I share with you my new found love or “obsession” as some friends like to call it.

It’s my hope that exploring this passion of mine alongside you would help inspire other naturals and those contemplating to join in our natural adventure or at the very least, we can all have fun talking about everything in between.
